Social networks and adolescence

It is time to talk seriously about the effects on new generations of unsupervised and uncontrolled access to social networks. Adolescents who spend more than 3 hours a day using social networks may be at greater risk of mental health problems, particularly problems of internalization; these difficulties may be related to somatization, insecurities, dependence, marked shyness, phobias, fear, sadness, worry, mood swings and obsessions.

The most affected by this phenomenon are young people. They are the ones who use the new technologies the most and at the same time the most influential sector of the population. It is clear that social networks have many positive aspects, but we must also be aware of their dangers.

Instagram and other social networks are often used as a showcase. It shows only the best moments, which generates a distortion of reality. Even self-esteem
of young people can depend on the number of likes you get in a photo.

This is not to say that you should avoid using Instagram or forbidding our children to use it. But always be aware of social networks and their influence.

Negative mood can interfere with acceptance, but poor school performance is also a risk factor for depression, as it feeds into a student’s low self-esteem.
